A commercial product photographer isn’t always just hired to snap some shots of pretty jewelry or clothing. Many times they are hired to help create marketing material for businesses. A brochure photographer and catalog photographer have similar objectives but for a brochure the objective is to use the images as a way of telling the story of the company or business.
A brochure photographer must be able to do more than just take great pictures; they must gain an understanding of the client themselves. If the brochure is about a company generally the building and some shots of the office and staff will be used. These three things in itself will require you to how knowledge of outdoor lighting, using existing indoor light and group photos and/or portrait photography. Each of these subjects will require different lighting equipment as well as the ability to shoot in different environments.
As a catalog photographer you will be called upon to shoot any number of items. Some will mean static product shots that can be set up in the studio using the light tents and soft boxes while other images may involve live models and large machines. Unlike brochure work, the catalog photographer is mostly concerned with the particular product being photographed and not the overall message. Some catalogs have a particular "look" to them. If the pictures for the catalog need to have a certain type of branding appearance, the catalog’s Marketing Director or Photo Director will provide information as to the style they want to achieve.
